Clin Micro Open 2019

Aug. 14, 2019

The Clin Micro Open (Open) is a forum that brings together laboratory and industry leaders to discuss current and potential issues affecting the future of diagnostic clinical microbiology and explore mechanisms to capitalize on opportunities and mitigate challenges.  The goal is to learn from each other by exchanging ideas and informal networking to cultivate partnerships and ultimately improve patient care.
This dynamic day-and-a-half forum will focus on several broad topics: laboratory stewardship; workforce shortage; diagnostic testing gaps; industry sponsored studies and collaboration; implementation and standardization of NGS; changes in healthcare finance and laboratory test reimbursement; and artificial intelligence in microbiology. The participants will present the keynote talks (10-minute presentations) followed by roundtable discussions with the intent of formulating recommendations for future activities or collaborations.

ASM will host its second Open at the Miramonte Indian Wells Resort & Spa in Palm Springs, Calif. It begins with a late afternoon session on December 5 and concludes by 5:00 pm on December 6. There will be approximately 50 attendees with equal representation between laboratory and industry. Industry attendees will be members of ASM’s Corporate Council and identified by their company. Federal employees will be invited participants. Laboratory leaders will be selected based on their submitted application and willingness to actively participate.

Applicants’ names will be blinded and applications will be independently scored by the Open Steering Committee Co-Chairs, Drs. Chris Doern and Sherry Dunbar and the Steering Committee members, Drs. Marc Couturier, Diane Flayhart, Amanda Harrington and Natalie Whitfield.

For the laboratory leaders who are selected, ASM will provide up to $600 for coach-class airfare, two nights hotel at the Open site, on-site meals during the meeting, per diem for travel days and ground transportation.
Eligibility: ASM members who are working fulltime in a clinical or public health laboratory at the director-level who have submitted an application, agreed to present a 10 minute talk, serve as a scribe or moderator, and actively participate in roundtable discussions.
Applications will be accepted until August 30, 2019. Applicants will be informed of the Steering Committee’s decision by September 15, 2019. Email with questions or concerns.
