Dr. Habiba I. Atta (B.Sc., M.Sc., Ph.D. Microbiology) is a Senior Lecturer of Environmental Microbiology in the Department of Microbiology, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria. Her areas of research include: bioremediation, soil metagenomics, microbial ecology, indoor air quality, renewable energy and biocontrol. She has participated in multidisciplinary studies in the fields of environmental engineering, chemical engineering, soil science and textile science.

She won the "Innovators of Tomorrow" grant for her master’s thesis on petroleum degradation by bacteria (awarded by the STEP B project of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Nigeria in conjunction with the World Bank). She also earned a scholarship under the Local Scholarship Scheme for the Petroleum Technology Development Fund, Nigeria, for her Ph.D. dissertation on identification of bacteria with potential for degrading polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons using molecular methods. A major part of her Ph.D. research was conducted at Cardiff University, United Kingdom. She was recently awarded the Fulbright Visiting Scholar position to conduct postdoctoral research on functional genes for petroleum bioremediation by bacteria and archaea in the United States.

She is a member of the following professional societies: American Society for Microbiology, Nigerian Society for Microbiology, Society for General Microbiology and 500WomenScientists. Find her online:
