Joel Manyahi, M.D., Ph.D., is a senior lecturer in microbiology and head of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) and is a consultant in clinical microbiology at Muhimbili National Hospital in Tanzania.

Manyahi has been involved in research and consulting pertaining to antimicrobial resistance and the diagnosis, control and prevention of infectious diseases in a resource-limited setting for the past 12 years. He wants to improve the diagnosis, control and prevention of infectious diseases by focusing more on improving diagnostic stewardship. Working with ASM in Tanzania, he has built the local capacities of the laboratories in the diagnosis of infectious diseases, as well as improved surveillance of health-care-associated infections and antimicrobial resistance. At the national level, he has been providing technical expertise in Tanzanian medicine and medical devices on in vitro diagnostics platforms.

He holds an M.D. and a Master of Medicine degree in microbiology and immunology from the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. He also received a Ph.D. from the University of Bergen, Norway, where his thesis focused on antimicrobial resistance in people living with HIV and its implications for infection prevention and control.
