Peter Gilligan is the former Director of the Clinical Microbiology-Immunology Laboratories of the University of North Carolina Hospitals. During 42 years as a clinical microbiologist, he has been involved in the clinical laboratories’ response to a wide range of “novel” infectious agents including Clostridium difficile, HIV, Burkholderia cepacia complex, Mycobacterium abscessus complex, anthrax, SARS and influenza A H1N1 2009. He has served as an editor of the Journal of Clinical Microbiology, Clinical Microbiology Reviews and was an initial member of the Board of Editors for mBio. A diplomate emeritus of the American Board of Medical Microbiology and Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology, he currently is involved in the community response to COVID-19 in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro community in North Carolina.
