Rup Lal, Ph.D., is a senior scientist at the Indian National Science Academy at Acharya Narendra Dev College, University of Delhi, New Delhi. Lal is the Senior Ambassador of International Society for Microbial Ecology and Federation of European Microbial Sciences to India. He is the fellow of Indian National Science Academy (FNA) New Delhi, fellow of National Academy of Sciences, Allahabad, India, fellow of National Academy of Agricultural Sciences and the fellow of Academy of Microbiological Sciences, India.
Lal serves as an adjunct professor at Career Point University, Hamirpur, India and Director (honorary) of Phixgen Pvt. Ltd. Gurugram, Haryana. He has over 40 years longstanding experience in teaching and research in microbiology. His specialty areas are microbial taxogenomics, genomics and metagenomics. He has published over 250 research papers with more than 10,000 International Scientific Information (ISI) citations. Lal was Editor in Chief of Indian Journal of Microbiology from 2006-2013 and has served as a member of the editorial board in various leading scientific journals like mSystems, Environmental Microbiology, Environmental Microbiology Reports and many more.
He was Ambassador, Indian Ocean Region for the American Society for Microbiology between 2012-2015. He is the recipient of several prestigious fellowships, including the Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship (Germany), Department of Biotechnology Overseas Fellowship, Intelligence and National Security Alliance-Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) Bilateral Exchange Program in 2018 and Indo-U.S. Science and Technology Forum-American Society for Microbiology (ASM) Professorship in Microbiology.
He is the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Association of Microbiologists of India in 2020, Endeavour Executive Fellowship from 2018-2019 in Australia, Moselio Schaechter Distinguished Service Award from American Society for Microbiology, Professor S.R. Vyas Memorial Award and Professor B.N. Johri Award for Microbial Diversity by the Association of Microbiologists of India.
