Rup Lal, Ph.D., is an INSA Senior Scientist at the University of Delhi, India. He serves as the Senior Ambassador for the International Society for Microbial Ecology (ISME) and the Federation of European Microbiological Societies (FEMS) in India. Previously, he was the Ambassador for India for the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) ( 2012-2015). Lal is a fellow of esteemed academies, including the American Academy of Microbiology; Indian National Science Academy; National Academy of Sciences, India; National Academy of Agricultural Sciences and the Academy of Microbiological Sciences, India.

He is also an adjunct professor at Career Point University, Hamirpur, and a visiting professor at Kumaun University, Nainital. Lal has over 40 years of expertise in teaching and research, focusing on rifamycin polyketide synthase gene cluster modifications, microbial taxogenomics, genomics and metagenomics. Lal has supervised over 75 Ph.D. theses and published over 250 research papers with more than 11,500 ISI citations. From 2006 to 2013, he served as Editor in Chief of the Indian Journal of Microbiology and has been on the editorial boards of mSystems, Environmental Microbiology, Environmental Microbiology Reports, BMC Biotechnology and many more.

Lal has served on several national and international committees, including the ASM-IUSSTF Indo-US Professorship in Microbiology review committee. He was President of the Association of Microbiologists of India in 2013-2014 and is currently President of the Indian Network for Soil Contamination Research.

Lal is the recipient of prestigious fellowships and awards, including the Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship, DBT (India) Overseas Fellowship, DFG Bilateral Exchange Program Fellowship, Endeavour Executive Fellowship (Australia), AMI Lifetime Achievement Award, ASM Moselio Schaechter Distinguished Service Award, Professor S.R. Vyas Memorial Award, Professor B.N. Johri Award and the INSA Distinguished Lecture Fellow award.
