This position is responsible for creating cutting-edge scientific content related to the microbial sciences for ASM members and other audiences for asm.org, social media and print publications.  This position supports the goals of the department and the mission of ASM.

Primary Responsibilities:

Content creation: Collaborate with internal staff on content ideas
  • Write and post (web, social) articles that span the microbial sciences
  • Oversee scientific content for Microcosm Magazine
  • Manage volunteer scientific writers
  • Consult with journal editors and authors and other scientists to generate story ideas and create engaging content for authors
Social Media
  • Generate, publish and share compelling social media content that drives engagement
  • Monitor all social accounts for comments and customer service issues, collaborating with appropriate staff or other SMEs as needed to ensure professional, timely responses (partnering with Digital Media Producer)
  • Stay abreast of trending topics, notable days and events (awards, holidays, awareness days, etc.) in the microbial sciences and share with team
  • Help set the tone and voice for ASM on social platforms based on ASM’s social media strategy
  • Cover ASM meetings and other related events as needed (live tweets, reviews, photos, etc.)
Other duties:
  • Plan and host sci-comm events at ASM Microbe and other outlets (Tweet Ups, Hackathons, writing for web, etc.)
  • Participate in sci-comm team retreats
  • Serve as scientific expert on various projects as needed
Required Education and Experience:
  1. Bachelors’ degree in journalism, STEM or English; advance degree in sciences required (Ph.D., M.S., M.D., etc.)
  2. 2 years of experience in writing
  3. 2-4 years of experience in the sciences
  4. 2 years of experience in an office or team setting
