Working with Marketing & Communications, the Scientific and Digital Editor is responsible for oversight of scientific accuracy as well as editorial accuracy and tone in voice in all of ASM’s published content in the communications and marketing team. This position supports the goals of the department and the mission of ASM.
Essential Functions
Content oversight, strategy and editorial management
  • With Senior Manager, Digital Strategy, co-lead content strategy for ASM staff on ASM’s website, including:
    • Managing content calendar
    • Holding regular content meetings and ensure content is created and posted according to agreed-upon timelines.
    • Staying up-to-date on latest content and web strategy trends; sharing knowledge with colleagues to build team skills and outcomes.
  • Serve as senior editor and approver for all ASM staff and volunteers for ASM’s web content.
  • Ensure content includes compelling and appropriate images that help move the story forward
  • Update, implement and enforce:
    • ASM-wide editorial style and governance guides.
    • Hierarchy and workflows for website governance.
  • Create original web content and coach staff on crafting quality web content.
  • Advise on science trends, news and research to help shape scientific content on
  • Maintain and oversee some CMS functions, such as:
    • Daily content pushes.
    • Levels of access for staff.
    • Updating keywords, tags and metadata as needed.
Print and other content management
  • Serve as scientific editor on a variety of printed materials as needed.
  • Co-manage publications like reports, member-facing magazines and publications with Senior Manager of Digital and Assistant Director of Science communications.
Reporting out and metrics
  • Run regular usage reports in GA, Crazy Egg and other analytics as needed for digital properties.
  • Under the guidance of the Sr. Manager, provide governance of shared vocabulary and digital taxonomy.
  • Report out on projects and findings regularly.
Technical Competencies
  • Excellent decision-making and organizational skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, project management tools and some Adobe Creative Suite
  • Meticulous editing skills
  • Innate ability to tell stories
  • Strong writing skills
  • Familiarity with editorial style guides
  • Familiarity with web or data governance
  • Familiarity with taxonomies, ontologies or knowledge graphs
  • Familiarity with web CMSs, social media and systems integrations

Required Education and Experience
  • Bachelors’ degree in journalism, content strategy, UX or English, microbiology or related field
  • Master’s or Ph.D. in microbiology or related field preferred
  • 5 years of content creation or management experience
