2023 ASMCUE Travel Awards

The American Society for Microbiology (ASM) offers 2 different Travel Awards for ASM Conference for Undergraduate Educators, Nov. 17-19, 2023 in Phoenix, Ariz. Each category of Travel Award has a separate application. 

Textbook Travel Award

ASMCUE is pleased to offer a one ASMCUE Textbook Travel Award to a first-time in-person ASMCUE attendee, who are currently teaching undergraduates at U.S.-based institutions (see eligibility). The Textbook Travel Award will cover the full cost of ASM Member Early-bird registration ($550) plus a $500 check on a reimbursement basis to help off-set the costs of travel and lodging.

Applicants will be notified of their award status in late July. If you apply for the ASMCUE Textbook Travel Award, please wait to register for the conference until you receive an update on your application status. The reimbursement is considered taxable income, and recipients will receive appropriate United States IRS tax filing documents at the end of the tax year.

Eligibility
  • Be a current 2023 ASM member, at any level except supporting member
  • Faculty member who has begun teaching microbiology within the past 3 years at an accredited U.S. college or university. May be a postdoc or early-career scientist.
  • Teach a course in undergraduate microbiology or participates in frequent outreach activities related to microbiology.
  • Preference is given to first-time in-person ASMCUE attendees. Applicants who have previously won an ASMCUE travel award are eligible to apply.
  • Preference is given to applicants who present their work at 2023 ASMCUE
Application Components
The Textbook Travel Award application should include the applicant’s:
  • Relevant teaching or outreach experience.
  • Brief teaching philosophy statement. 
  • Motivation to attend.
  • Description of other funding sources.
  • Letter of recommendation—As part of the application, the department chair or dean must address your commitment to education and the institution's commitment to your attendance at 2023 ASMCUE.
Award
Funding for the Textbook Travel Award derives from a special endowment created in 2008 by several textbook authors committed to faculty development and ASMCUE.

ASMCUE Travel Award

ASMCUE is pleased to offer a limited number of Travel Awards to first-time in-person ASMCUE attendees, who are currently teaching undergraduates at selected U.S.-based institutions (see eligibility). This Travel Award will cover the full cost of ASM member early-bird registration ($550). Applicants will be notified of their award status in late July, in enough time to register prior to the early-bird registration deadline of Aug. 15, 2023.

Eligibility
  • Be a current 2023 ASM member, at any level except supporting member.
  • 2023 will be your first time attending any in-person ASMCUE.
  • Currently teaching undergraduate students in any biological sciences discipline at a U.S.-based institution that is either a 2-year school or a minority-serving institution.
