Your health and safety are ASM’s utmost priority. As we plan to return to an in person meeting, we are actively evaluating conditions and developing meeting guidelines to ensure a safe environment for all participants traveling to Washington, D.C. 

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, local conditions and safety guidelines are constantly evolving. We are closely monitoring the current state, federal and local COVID-19 guidelines for in-person gatherings and travel restrictions since a lot can change between now and June 2022. 

ASM Microbe 2022 will also include a virtual component providing access to scientific programming and accommodating those who are unable or do not wish to attend in-person. Get details on the digital experience

ASM Microbe Health & Safety Policies

Vaccination required for all participants.

All participants (including exhibitors, guests, and staff) must show proof of full COVID-19 vaccination to attend ASM Microbe 2022. Participants must be fully vaccinated with a vaccine approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) or World Health Organization (WHO). Following current Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines, a person is considered fully vaccinated if they satisfy one of the following requirements:

  • 2 weeks after their second dose in a 2-dose series, such as the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines.
  • ​2 weeks after a single-dose vaccine, such as Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen vaccine. 

Additionally, COVID-19 vaccines authorized for emergency use by the World Health Organization (i.e., AstraZeneca/Oxford, Covishield, Sinopharm, and Sinovac), on or before May 9, 2022, are approved for attendance to ASM Microbe 2022. Please refer to the list of approved vaccines with WHO EUL/PQ evaluation status.

ASM strongly encourages all attendees take a COVID-19 test prior to departing to Washington, D.C. and following all guidelines set forth by the CDC for travel. 

SafeAccess Passes: Vaccine Verification and Entry Protocols for Registered In-person Attendees

ASM is partnering with SafeAccess, an industry-leading service provider, to ensure compliance with ASM’s health & safety policies. Beginning in early May, registrants will receive an invitation from SafeAccess to log into the platform to upload their vaccine documents. Participants are encouraged to add and to their approved senders email list.

SafeAccess typically reviews documents within 3-5 business days. If you have any questions or need assistance with your document upload, contact SafeAccess via email at Individuals must have a completed registration for ASM Microbe to receive an invitation to upload vaccine documentation. Participants are encouraged to upload documentation in advance to avoid delays in accessing the ASM Microbe meeting venue. Registrants will be required to present the SafeAccess pass to enter the convention center to pick-up badge credentials. 

*Requirements for entry to ASM Microbe 2022 are subject to change at any time based on governmental, venue, or other mandates applicable to the meeting. 

Masks Required For All ASM Microbe Activities and Events.

ASM will require masks at ASM Microbe 2022 regardless of local ordinances. All attendees, exhibitors, guests, staff and service partners will be required to wear masks in the convention center and at all ASM Microbe affiliated events held at local hotels or other off-site locations. Masks must completely cover your mouth and nose and fit snugly without gaps. Disposable masks will be available onsite.

Health Attestation Prior to Attending.

Prior to entering ASM Microbe meeting venues, participants must attest they have not:  

  • Been diagnosed with or tested positive for COVID-19 within the past 14 days.  
  • Been directed to self-isolate by a public health authority or healthcare provider due to potential exposure to COVID-19 within the past 14 days. 
  • Had any symptoms associated with COVID-19 infection, nor had any symptoms in the past 14 days, including: fever of over 100.0; cough (not attributed to a pre-existing condition); shortness of breath or difficulty breathing; fatigue; muscle or body aches; loss of taste or smell; sore throat; congestion or runny nose; nausea or vomiting; and/or diarrhea. 
  • Had close contact (within 6 feet) with anyone under known quarantine or diagnosed with COVID-19 or showing systems of COVID-19 in the past 14 days. 

Meeting Venue COVID-19 Safety Initiatives 

The Walter E. Washington Convention Center has earned the Global Biorisk Advisory Council (GBAC) STAR facility accreditation, the gold standard of prepared facilities. GBAC STAR facilities are able to implement appropriate work practices, procedures and systems to prepare, respond, and recover from outbreaks and pandemics. Their COVID-19 initiatives include: 

  • Thermal Scanning at Entrances: The convention center is deploying no contact, real-time multi-person thermal scanning throughout the Convention Center and Entertainment & Sports Arena. Using the latest technology from Certify.Me and Kogniz, they are able to measure body temperatures of individuals and groups of people entering the venues and use artificial intelligence to factor in environmental effects on individuals. Learn more about thermal scanning

  • Cutting-Edge Disinfection: In partnership with SurfaceGuard, the venue have deployed its high-grade COVID-19 remediation and health and safety reporting system at the Walter E. Health and Safety FAQs

What should I expect in session rooms?
  • Increased sanitizing of session rooms throughout the day by the convention center.  
  • Selected symposia will be live streamed to allow for remote viewing.   
What should I expect at networking events?
  • ASM is actively working with our venue partners to make necessary changes to our networking events to reduce risks to participants. Adjustments may include designated areas for eating and drinking, individually packaged food items and other precautions for contact-free catering service.    
What should I expect in the Exhibit & Poster Hall?
  • Security personnel to enforce mask mandate and social distancing in exhibit and poster hall.    
  • One-way aisles with directional floor sticker.    
  • Track Hub layout adjusted to allow for social distancing.   
  • Poster boards alternated with blank boards to provide social distancing.   
  • Inline booths will have 8’ divider drape.  
  • Capacity limits within exhibit booths.  
  • Increased sanitizing throughout the day with hand sanitation stations provided through the convention center and hall.
