In Memoriam: Pramer, David

1923-2022

David Pramer, renowned microbiologist, passed away on Dec. 18, 2022, at the age of 99.

Dr. Pramer had a distinguished and productive career in science, focused on 3 areas of endeavor: 1) a Professor of Microbiology at Rutgers doing seminal laboratory research; 2) a university administrator, whose many appointments included Director of University Research, Director of the Waksman Institute, and Associate Vice President for Corporate Liaison and Technology Transfer; and 3) more than 20 years of service traveling the world for UNESCO to advance microbiology programs in developing nations.

Dr. Pramer was a long-time member and strong supporter of ASM, and he was awarded “honorary membership” status by ASM, a status awarded to only a very few of its most distinguished members. He was also a fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology.

Dr. Pramer was a World War II veteran, who trained as a radio operator and waist gunner in the US Army Air Corps. He had a long and happy marriage of 67 years to his beloved wife Rhoda, was a devoted father to Andrew and Stacey, and a supportive grandfather to Emily and Erica.
