ASM Names Dr. Christina Cuomo as Editor-in-Chief of Microbiology Spectrum

Feb. 22, 2021

Washington, D.C. - February 22, 2021 - The American Society for Microbiology is pleased to announce that Dr. Christina Cuomo has been appointed Editor-in-Chief (EiC) of Microbiology Spectrum which is being re-launched as ASM’s sixth fully open-access journal, and will launch in spring 2021

Microbiology Spectrum’s editorial team is committed not just to open-access, but to open science. The journal will welcome manuscripts posted on preprint servers, will allow authors to publish their peer review records and will support authors in linking raw data to their published papers. The journal will provide authors with fair, rapid and rigorous peer review.

The launch of Microbiology Spectrum is an essential component of ASM's commitment to open-access and open science. I have the utmost confidence in Dr. Cuomo to lead Spectrums editorial team in realizing the journal’s vision,” said Stefano Bertuzzi, CEO, ASM.

“By setting aside the perceived impact as a criterion for publication, reviewers and editors can focus on ensuring the work is technically sound and sufficiently detailed so that it could be replicated by others. As with all of ASM’s journals, Microbiology Spectrum will promote a culture of openness and reproducibility,” said Dr. Cuomo.

Dr. Cuomo is the group leader for the Fungal Genomics Group and associate director in the Genomic Center for Infectious Diseases at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. Her group studies species across the fungal kingdom, using genomic methods to characterize the evolution of fungal pathogens. She holds a Ph.D. in genetics from Harvard University.

Finding the right person to be the EiC of Microbiology Spectrum is critical to the success of the journal’s launch. With Dr. Cuomo in that role, I know that the journal will become everything we hope for. Dr. Cuomo is dedicated to Microbiology Spectrum’s mission of promoting sound science, reproducibility and inclusivity. I was energized by her vision for the journal and am confident that ASM’s members will be as well,” said Pat Schloss, chair of ASM's Journals Committee.
