New ASM President and Leadership Begin Their Terms

Washington, D.C. – The American Society for Microbiology welcomes a new president, president-elect and new members of the Board of Directors and the Council on Microbial Sciences (COMS). They begin serving their leadership terms in July 2023.

Virginia Miller

Virginia Miller, Professor of Genetics and of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, will serve as the 2023-2024 ASM President. 

Theresa Koehler

Theresa Koehler, Professor and Chair for the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics at the University of Texas, Houston, will serve as President-Elect of the Board of Directors (BoD).

Robin Patel was elected as secretary of the Board of Directors and Victor DiRita will serve as treasurer. Michael Gilmore and Christina Kellogg were elected as at-large board directors. The Board of Directors provides strategic direction to the society, brings ASM’s mission to life and handles all legal, financial and governance matters.  

Seven new members were elected to ASM’s Council on Microbial Sciences (COMS), the dynamic governance structure representing the entirety of ASM as it pursues its mission. It is the key connection between ASM’s members and leaders. Heidi Kaplan will serve as vice chair of COMS and Lindsay Burbank, Brian Conlon, Amy Mathers and Shannon McQuaig Ulrich will serve as at-large councilors. Vaughn Cooper and Vincent Young will serve as COMS-elected board directors. Elected members of COMS will begin their terms in July 2023.

The American Society for Microbiology is one of the largest professional societies dedicated to the life sciences and is composed of 30,000 scientists and health practitioners. ASM's mission is to promote and advance the microbial sciences. 

ASM advances the microbial sciences through conferences, publications, certifications, educational opportunities and advocacy efforts. It enhances laboratory capacity around the globe through training and resources. It provides a network for scientists in academia, industry and clinical settings. Additionally, ASM promotes a deeper understanding of the microbial sciences to diverse audiences.
