ASM Statement on the Recent Executive Orders

Jan. 29, 2025

The American Society for Microbiology is reviewing the recent Executive Orders (EOs) and other actions issued by the Trump Administration and is concerned about their impact on human and animal health, the profession of microbiology and the scientific research that our members conduct, which generates phenomenal dividends for the health and economy of all Americans.

We remain committed to our core principles: advocating for evidence-based policies that harness the power of the microbial sciences to address humanity’s most pressing challenges in a manner that ensures access and accountability.  We will keep our members informed of policy developments that may affect the field and their work. ASM is working around the clock toward these goals.

We are also working closely with other organizations and our sibling societies to forge a path forward. We will collectively ensure robust support for federally funded scientific research, domestic and global public health programs and a scientific workforce that reflects the highest values of access and accountability. We will keep you updated and will provide insights as things progress.

As is stated in ASM’s strategic roadmap, “we must own our role in empowering the community of microbial scientists, and all stakeholders, to shape the future of the field.” ASM is steadfast in fulfilling its responsibility to support all microbial scientists and our stakeholders around the world.
