This position is responsible for developing and managing ASM’s public outreach activities, creating science outreach content for ASM’s communications channels and supporting ASM members interested in public outreach.  This position supports the goals of the department and the mission of ASM.  

Primary Responsibilities:
  1. Develops and manages public outreach activities
    • Oversees annual ASM Agar Art Contest, workshop partnership program and associated campaigns
    • Manages ASM’s presence at science festivals and identifies opportunities for future outreach initiatives that raise ASM’s visibility
    • Manages annual public outreach event at ASM Microbe
    • Collaborates with internal and external partners to develop and implement additional public programs
    • Evaluates impact of programs on target audiences
  2. Creates, edits and manages science outreach content for website, Microcosm and other channels
  3. Identifies opportunities and provide tools for members interested in public outreach
    • In partnership with membership staff, works with global and U.S.-based ambassadors, branches and chapters to represent ASM and promote the microbial sciences at public outreach events
    • Develops tools, such as facilitator’s guides and videos, that enable ASM members to do effective public outreach in their communities
    • Identifies opportunities for the Communication Committee to contribute to ASM’s public outreach initiatives, such as writing content and speaking or volunteering at events
  4. Complies with company policies, procedures and regulations
  5. Performs other related duties
Required Education and Experience
  1. Master’s or Ph.D. (preferable) in a biological science or science education
  2. 2+ years of experience coordinating informal science education or outreach programs
  3. Experience establishing or managing partnerships with science or science education organizations
