Andrew Darwin, Ph.D.

Andrew Darwin, Ph.D., is a professor in the Department of Microbiology at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. He did his undergraduate education at the University of Liverpool, followed by doctoral research at the University of Birmingham, both in the United Kingdom. After postdoctoral training at Cornell University and Washington University in St. Louis he joined the faculty at NYU Grossman School of Medicine.
Darwin serves on the editorial board of Journal of Bacteriology and previously served on the editorial board of Infection and Immunity and Microbiology Spectrum. He co-edited the book "Regulation of Bacterial Virulence" for ASM Press. He was an ASM Distinguished Lecturer 2010-2012 and served as the Molecular Biology and Physiology Track Leader on the ASM Microbe Planning committee for the 2020 and 2021 meetings. In 2020, he received the Journal of Bacteriology Jack Kenney Award for Outstanding Service and was also elected as a member of the American Academy of Microbiology.
Darwin's research has been aimed at understanding fundamental processes within the cell envelopes of gram-negative bacterial pathogens, originally studying Yersinia enterocolitica and now Pseudomonas aeruginosa. In P. aeruginosa his laboratory currently studies cell envelope stress responses, membrane protein function, proteolysis and autolysin control mechanisms.
