Carey-Ann Burnham, Ph.D., D(ABMM), FIDSA, F(AMM), is the founding Editor in Chief of ASM Case Reports, CEO at Pattern Bioscience and professor of pathology and immunology at Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine. Burnham is a clinical microbiologist, and at Pattern Bioscience she leads the clinical, microbiology, regulatory and quality teams. Prior to joining Pattern Bioscience, Burnham served as Vice Chair for Faculty Mentoring and Advancement in Pathology and Immunology, Medical Director of the System Clinical Microbiology Laboratory at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, and she was the Program Director for the Medical and Public Health Microbiology Fellowship at Washington University.

Burnham’s research program has focused on the development of new diagnostics for infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance and transmission and epidemiology of antimicrobial-resistant microorganisms. She has published more than 300 articles in the area of diagnostic and clinical microbiology. Burnham has held several editorial leadership roles, including serving as editor for the Journal of Clinical MicrobiologyClinical Microbiology Newsletter and the 5th Edition of ASM’s Clinical Microbiology Procedures Handbook. Burnham is a fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology (AAM). In 2020, Burnham received the prestigious ASM Award for Research or Leadership in Clinical Microbiology.
