Edwin Kamau, Ph.D., ABMM, ASCP is Senior Director of Medical & Scientific Affairs at Cepheid, Inc. He received his Ph.D. in biochemistry and molecular biology from Louisiana State University and a master’s degree in technology management from the University of Maryland. He completed a 2‑year ASM CPEP clinical microbiology fellowship at UCLA and is a diplomate of the American Board of Medical Microbiology.

Kamau served over 2 decades as a U.S. Army Medical Service Corps officer, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel after leading major infectious disease and laboratory programs. His assignments included Chief of the Department of Epidemiology and Threat Assessment at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, Director of the U.S. Army Medical Research Unit–Kenya and Chief and Medical Director of the Microbiology Laboratory at Tripler Army Medical Center. His research portfolio spans sexually transmitted infections, HIV co‑infections, malaria drug resistance, controlled human malaria infection studies, vaccine and drug clinical field trials and global pathogen surveillance, integrating molecular diagnostics, antimicrobial resistance, genomics, bioinformatics and field epidemiology.

At Cepheid, Kamau provides scientific leadership across the company’s infectious disease diagnostics portfolio. He guides evidence generation, product development and clinical validation, and serves as a subject matter expert in antimicrobial resistance, diagnostic stewardship and global health at national and international scientific forums.
