James E. Kirby, M.D., D(ABMM)

James E. Kirby, M.D., is Director of the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory and a member of the Experimental Pathology Division at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. His clinical and research interests include antimicrobial development, novel treatment strategies for multidrug-resistant bacterial infections, antimicrobial resistance and innovations in infectious disease diagnostics. He is the Founding Program Director of the Medical Microbiology Fellowships at BIDMC and a fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology.
Kirby received his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. He completed residency training in Clinical Pathology at Massachusetts General Hospital, followed by postdoctoral research training in bacterial pathogenesis at Tufts University School of Medicine.
Kirby is board certified in clinical pathology and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Medical Microbiology. Kirby previously served as President of the Northeast Branch of the American Society for Microbiology.
