Jennifer B.H. Martiny, Ph.D., is a professor in the Department of Biotechnology and Biomedicine at the Technical University of Denmark and in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of California, Irvine. She received her B.S. in ecology, behavior and evolution at UC San Diego and her Ph.D. at Stanford University.
Her research aims to uncover fundamental principles of the generation and maintenance of diversity in microbial communities by bringing together perspectives from microbiology, ecology and evolutionary biology. She helped to develop conceptual frameworks to understand microbial biogeographic patterns and the response of soil microbiomes to global change. Her current work investigates how eco-evolutionary processes that influence microbiome assembly can be leveraged for microbiome engineering. She is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a fellow of the Ecological Society of America, the American Academy of Microbiology and the American Association for the Advancement for Science.
