Julia Van Etten, Ph.D.

Julia Van Etten is an incoming assistant professor at University of Maryland. She is a genome and evolutionary biologist with interests in protists and how DNA moves between genomes across communities. She received her Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolution from Rutgers University and her B.S. in Marine Science and Biology from University of Miami. She is also an avid hobby microscopist and science communicator working to democratize microscopy. To this end, she hosts the Tiny Living Beings podcast and runs Couch Microscopy, a multimedia project documenting the biodiversity of microorganisms that live around us but are rarely seen.
