Kelly Doran, Ph.D., is a professor of immunology and microbiology at the University of Colorado, Anschutz Medical Campus. She relocated her laboratory in July 2017 after developing her research program at San Diego State University (2007-2017). Doran has a broad background in molecular microbiology and innate immunology with expertise working with gram-positive bacterial pathogens including Streptococcus, Staphylococcus, Bacillus and Enterococcus.
The interest of the Doran laboratory lies in understanding fundamental mechanisms of bacterial pathogenesis and cellular immune/inflammatory responses, specifically during bacterial meningitis, colonization and ascending infection in the female reproductive tract, or in diabetic wound infection caused by Group B Streptococcus (GBS). More recent projects seek to understand the role of the normal microbiota and other pathobionts in GBS pathogenesis. Using a variety of molecular genetic approaches, her research team seeks to discover and characterize bacterial virulence determinants involved in cytotoxicity, adherence, invasion, inflammation and resistance to immunologic clearance, as well as interaction with native microbiota. She also investigates the contribution of host factors such as surface receptors, signal transduction pathways and transcription factors in defense against invasive bacterial infection. Doran is passionate about mentoring and has a successful record of training the next generation of scientists.
