Laura Hug, Ph.D.

Dr. Hug is an Assistant Professor and Tier II Canada Research Chair in Environmental Microbiology in the Department of Biology at the University of Waterloo. Her research program examines microbial communities from urban, agricultural and contaminated sites, focusing on organisms with activities that can be leveraged for bioremediation or biomining. Her lab combines meta-omic, bioinformatic and classical microbiological techniques to characterize novel organisms. Dr. Hug is a Kavli fellow of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences and a Governor General's gold medal recipient. Her research has been profiled in the New York Times, Discover Magazine and international news outlets including The Guardian.
