Marie Elliot, Ph.D., is a professor and chair of the Biology Department at McMaster University, Canada. She obtained her B.S. and Ph.D. at the University of Alberta and completed her post-doctoral training at the John Innes Centre, U.K.
Elliot’s research is broadly focused on understanding the molecular mechanisms governing bacterial growth, development and metabolism in the context of microbial communities and dynamic growth conditions. She is particularly interested in environmental Streptomyces bacteria, given their complex developmental life cycle and the associated genetic and biological innovations that support this, and given their prodigious metabolic capabilities, including the production of most naturally-synthesized antibiotics, many of which have been co-opted for clinical and agricultural application.
Elliot was elected a fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology, is a past President of the Canadian Society for Microbiologists and has received Tier II Canada Research Chair and Science Research Chair recognitions, alongside awards for graduate student and post-doctoral fellow mentorship. She served as an editor for Applied and Environmental Microbiology and was on the editorial board of the Journal of Bacteriology for 15 years. Elliot is currently on the editorial boards for Molecular Microbiology, Current Opinion in Microbiology and the Canadian Journal of Microbiology.
