Wei Huang, Ph.D., is a professor of biological engineering in University of Oxford and fellow of St. Edmund Hall, Oxford. He is a fellow of European Academy of Microbiology and was an EPSRC fellow in synthetic biology 2014-2019. He has published over 160 peer-reviewed scientific papers in leading journals, including Nature Microbiology, PNAS, Nature Communications and Science Advances. He is an associate editor of Microbial Biotechnology.

His research is funded by U.K. and various international research funding bodies, and he is an inventor of over 30 patents. His inventions include a SARS-CoV-2 rapid test technology that contributed to the development of a diagnostics company that listed on Nasdaq in New York. His research focuses on AI-enabled synthetic biology, single cell biology and translational biotechnology. He has developed SimCell (simple cell) platform for medical applications (e.g., cancer therapy and infection treatment) and sustainable biomanufacturing. He has also developed an artificial photosynthesis system based on rhodopsin light harvesting for CO2 fixation. He is one of the pioneers in applying Raman micro-spectroscopy to the study of single cells, and to develop Raman activated cell sorting, Raman-FISH (fluorescent in-situ hybridization) and Raman-SIP (stable isotope probing) technologies. He has also applied ultrasound to deliver DNA into different bacteria.
