Call For Proposals
The 2025 ASMCUE Planning Committee is soliciting proposals for sessions, posters and microbrews. Presentations will take place Nov. 21-23, 2025. Please note that all presenters on the presentation must register for ASMCUE, so for purposes of ASMCUE abstracts, only list presenters/speakers who will attend the in-person ASMCUE meeting.
Before submitting your abstract, please carefully read the following information and instructions. If you have any questions, contact the ASMCUE programming staff for assistance.
Deadline to submit: Tuesday, July 15 2025 at 5 p.m. ET.
Proposal Types & Rubrics
ASMCUE has an open call for 3 types of submissions: sessions, posters and microbrews. Each proposal type has different type of content, format and review criteria.
Proposals must include a description of evidence and/or data that has been collected to support the effectiveness of the approach in improving student learning or achieving student learning outcomes. For those interested in presenting 2 sessions around a single topic, participants should submit 2 proposals (i.e., Part 1 and Part 2).
Abstracts must be based on results that have not been published in any peer-reviewed journal before Nov. 21, 2025. Pre-print journal publications are exempt. ASMCUE allows submission of posters that are based on results presented at other conferences.
- Sessions introduce attendees to innovative and relevant strategies for undergraduate biology education by building awareness and understanding of new vocabulary, concepts and ways of thinking.
- Posters focus on education research outcomes associated with any of the subdisciplines in the biological sciences.
- Microbrews are an opportunity to receive feedback on an activity or idea for any classroom or lab in the biological sciences.
Some Topics of Particular Interest to the ASMCUE Planning Committee:
- New findings and initiatives in biology education research.
- Classroom practices and policies to support teaching for a broad range of students.
- Supporting success in the biology classroom for students from all backgrounds.
- Strategies for meeting students where they are, both academically and socially.
- Ideas for course-based undergraduate research experiences.
- Career development for educators.
- Strategies for maintaining balance and sustainability as as educator.
Notes About the Proposal Application:
- Only list presenters who will deliver the presentation at the in-person conference.
- Applicants can save progress on their application and return to complete at a later time.
- “Attendee” refers to the ASMCUE conference attendee, and “student” refers to individuals that attendees teach at their home institutions/organizations. “Strategy” refers to the concept, skill, task, approach or method of learning or instruction that is being described.
- New in 2025: The ASMCUE Planning committee does not allow artificial intelligence to assist with any part of the preparation of ASMCUE submissions. All work for the submission must be completed by the human scholar.
Review Criteria
Competitive proposals are well organized, present the idea or activity clearly and demonstrate a reasonable timeline for the presentation. All submissions are reviewed by the ASMCUE Review Committees according to the rubrics. The Committee reserves the right to contact authors for more information and to transfer submissions, if warranted, to another presentation format within the conference program. A proposal must discuss any commercial product or service, name the product and disclose any potential conflicts of interest. Proposals that promote a specific commercial product or service for purchase will be recommended for the ASMCUE Exhibit and Sponsorship Program.
Sessions
Format
A 30-minute interactive talk with standard A&V and projector. Sessions must include learning activities for ASMCUE attendees.Overview
Education sessions are opportunities to introduce attendees to innovative and relevant strategies for undergraduate biology education by building awareness and understanding of new vocabulary, concepts and ways of thinking. Topics could include, but are not limited to: (a) innovative teaching techniques or strategies; (b) effective assessment tools or concept inventories; (c) lecture or laboratory course reform; (d) discipline-based educational research; or (e) metacognition and affective learning.Proposals must include a description of evidence and/or data that has been collected to support the effectiveness of the approach in improving student learning or achieving student learning outcomes. For those interested in presenting 2 sessions around a single topic, participants should submit 2 proposals (i.e., Part 1 and Part 2).

- ASMCUE attendee learning outcomes and engagement plan.
- Context of strategy, student learning outcomes and evidence/data that supports effectiveness.

Posters
Format
A printed poster in the Exhibit and Poster Hall.Overview
The subject of all posters at ASMCUE is the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, Biology Education Research and similar fields; ASMCUE does not accept poster submissions that discuss scientific research (i.e., bench, laboratory, field, modelling). The abstract should describe innovative teaching approaches or the specific activities conducted by students or faculty and indicate, with assessment data, how those changes affected learning. Work described in the abstract must have been tested on students and assessment of the activity’s outcomes must be described. Analyzed data and conclusions must be included.Abstracts must be based on results that have not been published in any peer-reviewed journal before Nov. 21, 2025. Key Abstract Components
- Background.
- Statement of Research Question.
- Study design and methods
- Data supporting effectiveness of strategy and conclusion. Descriptive statistics, inferential statistics or exploratory data analysis would fulfill this requirement.
- Concluding statement.
Microbrews
Format
ASMCUE will offer 2 exciting formats for microbrews: a 10-minute interactive talk, followed by 5-minute Q&A (“fermentation room”), or a printed poster in the Exhibit and Poster Hall (“small stage”). You can indicate a modality preference in the application, but the final assignment of modality will be determined by the ASMCUE Planning Committee and is a function of space limitations.Overview
A microbrew showcases a “brewing idea” in any of the subdisciplines in the biological sciences. Unlike other poster presentations at ASMCUE, assessment data are not required. The committee encourages presenters to share ideas and activities for the classroom and/or lab. This is an ideal forum to share or field test new ideas and solicit feedback for improvement from other educators with similar interests. Speakers are encouraged to make their 10-minute talk interactive and to engage their audience in a learning experience, if the subject matter is appropriate for this format.Key Application Components
