Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza A(H5N1) (HPAI H5N1) has been found in wild birds worldwide and is causing outbreaks in poultry and U.S. dairy cows, with several recent human cases in U.S. dairy and poultry workers. While the current public health risk is low for the general population, the CDC is watching the situation carefully and working with state health departments to monitor symptomatic people with animal exposure.
In an effort to address diagnostic questions that clinical laboratories may have, ASM and APHL jointly developed an FAQ document for clinical laboratories on testing of HPAI H5N1.
For more information, watch the ASM webinar on HPAI H5N1 from April 2025.
