In Memoriam: Costerton, John William (Bill)

(19?? - 2012)

John William (Bill) Costerton, Ph.D., a pioneer in biofilm research, dedicated over 40 years to studying bacteria in biofilms. Inspired by his love for climbing in the Canadian Rockies, he first observed biofilm formation while examining slippery rocks in alpine streams. His groundbreaking biofilm research, focused on how bacteria grow within a protective matrix and adhere to solid surfaces, revolutionized our understanding of microbial life. As Director of the Center for Biofilm Engineering at Montana State University, his influence as the field of biofilm research matured was pervasive. Known as the "Father of Biofilms" and "The King of Slime," he mentored countless students and colleagues, fostering a collaborative approach to research. Costerton published over 700 peer-reviewed papers, advancing biofilm research in environmental, dental and medical microbiology, and leading to key medical breakthroughs in chronic and implant-related infections. The Costerton Biofilm Centre at the University of Copenhagen is named in his honor, and his legacy continues to influence the field.

Costerton passed away on May 12, 2012.
