New ASM President and Leadership Begin Their Terms

Washington, D.C. - July 1, 2020 - The American Society for Microbiology welcomes a new president,  president-elect, 2 members of the Board of Directors and 4 members of the Council on Microbial Sciences (COMS), who begin serving their leadership terms today, July 1.

Victor DiRita, Rudolph Hugh Endowed Chair in Microbial Pathogenesis and Chair of the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics at Michigan State University, will lead ASM for a 1 year term as president.

Steve Finkel, Professor of Biological Sciences and Dean of Graduate and Professional Education at University of Southern California, starts his term as president-elect and will serve as president in July 2021.

Virginia Miller will serve her second 3 year term on ASM’s Board of Directors and Julie Segre will join the Board. Vaughn Cooper and Elizabeth Marlowe will begin their 3 year terms as the COMS-Elected Board directors. The Board of Directors provides strategic direction to the society, brings ASM’s mission to life and handles all legal, financial and governance matters.

Four new members will begin their terms serving on ASM’s COMS, the dynamic governance structure that is the key connection between ASM’s members and ASM’s leaders. Alison Criss, Rebecca Ferrell, Amy Mathers and Shannon McQuaig Ulrich will serve 3 year terms on COMS. Suzi Fleiszig will serve as the new COMS chair and Rebecca Ferrell will serve as vice chair.


The American Society for Microbiology is the largest single life science society, composed of more than 30,000 scientists and health professionals. ASM's mission is to promote and advance the microbial sciences.

ASM advances the microbial sciences through conferences, publications, certifications, educational opportunities and advocacy efforts. It enhances laboratory capacity around the globe through training and resources. It provides a network for scientists in academia, industry and clinical settings.
