We Need to Start Planning for a Post-COVID-19 Research Ecosystem Now
Washington, D.C. – November 23, 2020 - ASM CEO Stefano Bertuzzi and ASM President Victor DiRita have penned an editorial, published in mBio, calling for the scientific community to begin planning for major changes to the scientific research system post- COVID-19 that will significantly alter its foundation.Drs. Bertuzzi and DiRita draw upon principles of Vannevar Bush’s landmark report in Science (published 75 years ago) and call for a new foundation of the scientific research system that will:
• Prioritize open science, open data, open access. Encourage integration and collaboration among disciplines and professional societies
• Include basic biology and medical research as fundamental to national security
• Improve and enhance science education and training, leading to a more diverse workforce that reflects society
• Offer a national and global vision for science
