ASM Launches New Certificate Program for Aspiring Medical Laboratory Professionals

July 7, 2021

Washington, D.C. – July 7, 2021 – The American Society for Microbiology (ASM) one of the largest professional associations of scientists and health practitioners, has partnered with Weber State University (WSU) to institute a new microbiology certificate program for individuals looking to enter the medical laboratory profession.

“The goal of this new program is to infuse the Clinical Microbiology laboratory workforce, which has been experiencing a shortage for years. COVID-19 has amplified the need for a robust qualified laboratory workforce to protect public health, and this program provides the necessary education and training to grow the profession,” said Dr. Susan Sharp, former ASM President.

ASM-WSU’s 4-course, independent study program is an affordable and efficient option for individuals who have at least a bachelor's degree in a related field (e.g., biological science or chemistry) to qualify for the professional certification required to work in a laboratory.

Through this partnership, WSU will provide the educational content and ASM’s members’ laboratories will serve as the training sites. All coursework will be offered online and students will train at a laboratory in their area.

Students who successfully complete the program will qualify to take the Technologist in Microbiology M(ASCP) certification examination from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), the accrediting body for clinical professionals.

The program will begin enrolling students in June, with online coursework beginning in Fall 2021.
