Join the free, hour-long Journal of Virology Seminar Series webinars, where authors will present their recently published Journal of Virology® (JVI) articles and share the story behind their research with the wider academic community. Presentations are followed by an open forum panel discussion with all speakers and participants. JVI editors will moderate the sessions, including the discussion and live Q&A.

Proteolytic Activation of Influenza A Virus Hemagglutinin in the Airway Epithelium

March 4, 2026 | 11 a.m. ET

In this Journal of Virology Seminar Series, Michael Vahey, Ph.D., will present his lab’s recent studies on the proteolytic activation of influenza A viruses (IAVs). IAVs utilize host proteases to activate the viral fusion protein, hemagglutinin, into its fusion-competent form. This presentation is composed of recent work by the Vahey Laboratory to understand the cell-type dependence of HA activation within the airway epithelium and the subcellular location(s) in which it occurs. This presentation will also highlight implications and challenges for the development of broad-spectrum antivirals that target host proteases.

Key Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the role of host proteases in enveloped virus entry.
  • Understand differences between cell subsets in the airway epithelium that influence viral infection and replication.
  • Understand fluorescence-based approaches to studying proteolytic activation of viral envelope proteins.

About the Journal

The Journal of Virology® (JVI) is a Subscribe to Open (S2O) ASM journal dedicated to publishing primary research, minireviews and other article formats that interrogate fundamental processes and structure in viruses, the mechanisms by which they interact and evolve with their host and environment, novel methodologies and therapeutic and diagnostic strategies.
